Background

Growth Lab for Africa

(gla)

The University of Eswatini (UNESWA) comprises several faculties and academic institutes as well as administrative centres and units which are bound together by legislative and statutory protocols of the institution. As part of its remit, UNESWA established the Growth Lab for Africa (the GLA) in June 2023.

VISION

To be the major catalyst for economic growth and sustainable development in Africa.

MISSION

To enable the people of Africa to grow their economies, enhance individual wellbeing and achieve national development through access to cutting-edge research, evidence-based policies, effective innovation and entrepreneurship as well as seamless technology adoption and diffusion.

Mandate & Objectives

themes & projects

To build ‘the Africa we want’ as advocated in Agenda 2063 of the African Union, establishing an accurate measure of economic growth and developing appropriate diagnostic tools are the first steps in ensuring evidence-based public and industrial policies, with subsequent program implementation and evaluation.

  • Our multidisciplinary team is, first and foremost, concerned with the current measurement mechanism used in quantifying Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a sufficient indicator of human welfare. The GLA Team believes that human wellbeing is equally important. Therefore, the fundamental layer of our focus lies in inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.
  • Moreover, we believe that African economies will grow through the upgrading of existing products, diversification into more complex products, and specialization in the production of manufactures amenable to producer participation in Global Value Chains (GVCs).
  • The GLA facilitates the generation of information on the structural transformation of economies, tacit knowledge, technology diffusion and coordination of knowhow.
  • The GLA engages with the public and the private sectors by relying firmly on the service mix of ‘fieldworkers’, scientific research, and matching policy design and implementation.
  • Our researchers are animated by the predominant feature of the manufacturing sector; namely, the persistent productivity decline and other weakening levers of economic growth in the African continent. We seek to leverage on, among other things, the instruments of international trade integration to appropriately align them with the heterogeneous national economic policies. This approach ensures that the team acknowledges that these initiatives are not of a ‘one-size-fits-all’ nature, but are contingent on a country’s specific circumstances.
  • The impact of climate change has altered the distribution of natural water resources and food security in rural Africa. The GLA Team and its partners are committed to the alleviation of the effects of climate change by conducting in-depth research, influencing related public policy and collaborating with rural communities to set up commercial enterprises.

Training & Events

The provision of support through innovation and entrepreneurship eco-systems as well as diffusion of technology only succeed if relevant government policies are formulated, implemented and evaluated. Equally, a scalable and sustainable approach to innovation and entrepreneurship needs to exist in a viable innovation eco-system and to focus on benefiting communities through supporting relevant individuals and companies.
